Troika Meeting with the United States

The EU Troika, led by Swedish Permanent Representative Anders Lidén, met with United States Permanent Representative to the UN Susan Rice on 11 August.

During the meeting there was an exchange of views on the upcoming Climate Summit (22 September), UN peacekeeping, disarmament and non-proliferation, Middle East, and other issues of mutual interest during the 64th session of the general Assembly such as human rights and the UN budget and scales of assessment.

The EU expressed appreciation for the new U.S. approach to the United Nations, and noted in particular the stated intention of the administration to pay the peacekeeping arrears, and also to pay U.S. assessed contributions to the UN more promptly.

There was agreement that EU and U.S. would consult closely at the working level on issues of mutual concern in preparing for the upcoming session of the General Assembly.
