Two Israelis nominated to the 2009 “Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award”

To honour Ms Astrid Lindgren, her work and memory as well as to promote children and youth literature around the world, the Swedish government has founded an international prize in her name, “The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award”.

There are 153 candidates nominated for the award for 2009, among them two Israeli candidates, Daniella Carmi and Hilla Havkin.

The award of five million Swedish crowns is the worlds largest for children and youth literature, and the second largest literature prize in the world. The large sum emphasize the importance that Sweden attaches to good children and youth literature.

The jury will announce the recipient by middle of March in Vimmerby, Sweden. The Award Ceremony is held in Stockholm in May.

Astrid Lindgren is one of the world’s most popular author. She passed away at the age of 94.

Ms Emily Elhacham was awarded a Diploma of Excellence for developing a potential Lifesaving Nanosensor Technology breakthrough. The winner was a Turkish student who developed an innovative method for generating energy through piezoelectric pulses from falling rain drops. In all, national winners from 30 countries will competed for the honour, which included a USD 5,000 price award and a blue crystal sculpture in the shape of a water droplet.
