European Film Festival 2009 in Tanzania

The Embassy of Sweden, as part of its EU Presidency program, is arranging this year’s European Film Festival. The festival brings you an explosion of adventurous, funny, sad, educational and above all, entertaining films played out on the streets of St. Petersburg, in the heat of the Sahara desert, in remote villages in Sweden, or maybe on the high seas of the world for all to enjoy.

Time: 16 – 29 October 2009
Venue: New World Cinema, Mwenge, Dar es Salaam
Entrance: Free

With the essential assistance of our 23 great sponsors, entrance remains free and the policy of ‘first come, first serve’, will ensure that anyone is able to watch the 31 films from 14 European countries, the European Commission in Tanzania and some great Tanzanian film.

The European Year 2009 has as its theme “Creativity and Innovation”. This is picked up in the trailer for the festival which is produced by future Tanzanian filmmakers and where children from the Dogo Dogo Centre are experiencing the joy of acting for the very first time.

The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and Sweden have today signed a Bilateral Financing Agreement under which Sweden will provide Swedish Kronor 229.6 Million, equivalent to Tanzania shillings 44.4 billion to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania on Research Cooperation for the Period 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2013.

Oct 13 2009 Higher education is an overlooked way of fighting poverty
Introduction: The Firth EDCTP (European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership) Forum took place in Arusha, Tanzania, on October 12-14. During the Forum the Swedish Ambassador to Tanzania Mr Staffan Herrström gave a speech on “Higher education and capacity development as means to fight poverty and poverty related diseases”. May 25 2009 Promoting the End of Corporal Punishment in Tanzania
2009 is an important year. It is the target date set by the UN Study on Violence against Children for prohibition of all corporal punishment of children, including in the home. It is also the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and 30 years since Sweden became the first state in the world to ban corporate punishment for all children, also in the family.
