Swedish EU Presidency in Tanzania – promoting human rights, democracy and transparency
“Taking on the challenge” is the Swedish motto for the next six months as Sweden assumes the EU Presidency at a time of global financial crises. Handling the economic crises and combating climate change will be the two main priorities on a global level.

SWEDEN SUPPORTS RESEARCH CAPACITY IN TANZANIA - JOINT PRESS RELEASE
The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and Sweden have today signed a Bilateral Financing Agreement under which Sweden will provide Swedish Kronor 229.6 Million, equivalent to Tanzania shillings 44.4 billion to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania on Research Cooperation for the Period 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2013.

Higher education is an overlooked way of fighting poverty
Introduction: The Firth EDCTP (European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership) Forum took place in Arusha, Tanzania, on October 12-14. During the Forum the Swedish Ambassador to Tanzania Mr Staffan Herrström gave a speech on “Higher education and capacity development as means to fight poverty and poverty related diseases”. Promoting the End of Corporal Punishment in Tanzania
2009 is an important year. It is the target date set by the UN Study on Violence against Children for prohibition of all corporal punishment of children, including in the home. It is also the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and 30 years since Sweden became the first state in the world to ban corporate punishment for all children, also in the family.
