Objects at a great distance can appear romantic and appealing, something unreachable, intangible, but to be viewed. The opposite applies to things in our everyday sphere - just beneath the lighthouse is always dark. What comes between them is beautiful distance and delicate diplomacy.

In her art practice, Mako Ishizuka turns a spotlight on physical and psychological distances that are present in her everyday surroundings that are away from her native Japan. She has attempted to negotiate the distances by playing with gaps between appearance, perception and interpretation.

The exhibition 'Journey with Light Luggage' presents her various installations and on-going projects that deal with the subjects related to travel, such as views, places and languages. With those works that reflect her personal path, she offers another perspective towards the world and the everyday.

Mako Ishizuka was born in Kobe, Japan and studied contemporary art at Malmö Art Academy (Sweden), Gerrit Rietveld Academy (the Netherlands) and Goldsmiths College (United Kingdom). She is based in Sweden and her practice is presented mostly in Europe. She has received several grants such as from Pola Art Foundation (2004), Agency for Cultural Affairs (2007) and Arts Grants Committee in Sweden (2008). Her recent exhibition includes a group exhibition project at Museum of Contemporary Art in Hiroshima, Japan in October 2009.
