Presented by Flagey and Eunic Brussels in cooperation with the Swedish Presidency of the European Union and the European Economic and Social Committee
Starting on the very day events took place twenty years ago, the Festival FOCUS ’89 intends to celebrate the Fall of the Berlin Wall, which marked the birth of a New Europe.
Through a varied film selection, curated by Belgian film critic Louis Danvers in cooperation with the Cinematek, the festival will tell the major moments and themes which marked the last 20 years of European history: from the life before to the migratory phenomenon, from nostalgia to the raise of new nationalisms, all of it contributing to the birth of the New Europe whose challenges we are still facing today.
Each film will be introduced by either its director, its scriptwriter or the author of the book the film was based on.
The topics dealt with in the different movies will be further developed by three debates. In these occasions, cultural personalities from all over Europe will approach some of the most crucial themes of our social, cultural and economic life.
The Swedish film “Lilja 4-ever” by Lukas Moodysson will be screened during the festival.
