The Sami People

‘The Native Spirit Festival is an annual season of films, talks and performances promoting the Cultures of Indigenous people’. Sweden is respresented by the Sami.

Liselotte Waistedt´s animated documentary Sami Nieida Jojk is a road movie into Samiland and the director´s return to her Sami roots. Herdswoman, directed by Kine Boman reflect the life in Sapmi by three generations and the transition from nomadic existence to modern society. Spirits for Sale is directed by Folke Johansson from Sweden but deals with the issues of the indigenous people of North America. The film is followed by a Round Table Forum where Folke Johansson and co-director Annika Banfield take part.

    ‘The Birthday Party’ marks the tenth birthday of the Flow Gallery. To celebrate the occasion, the gallery invited 12 passionate women collectors to nominate 12 artists with the brief to create a place setting for a festive table. Swedish ceramist Mia E Göransson, selected by Lady Frances Sorrel, takes inspiration from nature for her setting of cups and vessels.

  • 1 - 5 Oct 2009 Jeniferever in the UK
    The slow paced melodic sound of Swedish indie band Jeniferever has been described as ambient indie rock or post rock and compared to bands such as the Appleseed Cast and Sigur Rós. The band was formed in 1996 and comes from the university town of Uppsala just north of Stockholm. Their latest CD, ‘Spring Tides’ was released earlier this year. Jeniferever has played in the UK in September and will play in London, Brighton and Southampton during the first week of October.

    Swedish novelist, playwright and artist August Strindberg (1849 – 1912) wrote 58 plays during his lifetime and has arguably become one of the most influential Scandinavian writers of all time. Sex and power dominate his scandalous masterpiece, ‘Miss Julie’ as Strindberg explores what draws men and women together – and makes them want to destroy each other. ’Miss Julie’ is directed by Stephen Unwin and the cast includes Daniel Betts, Lucy Briers and Rachel Pickup.   • 13 Oct 2009 Stand-up comedy at the Pipeline
    Swedish stand-up comedians Tobias Persson and Lasse Nilsen are appearing at the new Scandinavian venue the Pipeline together with two British colleagues. Tobias Persson was awarded best male comedian at the Swedish stand up gala in Stockholm in August 2008 and Lasse Nilsen is guaranteed to be one of the most visual stand-up comedians around with a body control which leaves the audience stunned.

  • 17 Oct 2009 Christian Lindberg in concert
    The Nordland Music Festival takes world renowned conductor, composer and trombonist Christian Lindberg with Bodø Sinfonietta to London´s Cadogan Hall where they will be presenting a programme which includes Lindberg´s new Concerto for trombone and sinfonietta as well as works by Rolf Wallin, Iannis Xenakis and Jan Sandström.
